This publication focusses on the Aral Sea crisis - the result of economic processes set in motion by the planners of the erstwhile Soviet Union in the 1950s. It is one of the biggest ecological disasters, second only to Chernobyl, leading to a total collapse of the socio-economic life of the people.
This publication presents the proceedings of a debate on the state of the national parks and sanctuaries, and whether the people living in and around these protected areas should be involved in their management or not.
This project would conserve biodiversity by implementing the ecodevelopment stratey in and around eight protected areas (PAs) and would also include support for preparing future biodiversity projects.

The Pench tiger reserve is named after the Pench river which flows from north to south through the park. This river constitutes the district boundary of Seoni and Chhindwara districts of Madhya Pradesh in the upper region and state boundry with Maharashtra state in the lower region. This area became the 29th tiger reserve of India in 1992.
