Bangalore: The impact of the landfill at Mavallipura which has made life hell for residents of the area is likely to be felt far and wide.

Mysore: A herd of elephants has been shifted from neardry Bandipur to a deeper Mulehole area inside the sanctuary where active water bodies and fodder still exist.

Most of the waterholes and tanks in the Bandipur camp have gone dry in the very first week of summer, forcing the Bandipur tiger sanctuary authorities to move the elephants to leafy terrains in the interiors.

Bangalore: An initiative by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) to address the problem posed by slurry waste from granite units at Jigani along Bannerghatta Road has become a boon for garbage contractors. They have got the chance to dump waste on the sly in abandoned quarries of the area.

At least 20 tonnes of Bangalore’s waste finds its way here. The KSPCB though is not complaining, given that it hasn’t really affected its plans to dump slurry waste in the quarry pits.

BANGALORE: Karnataka is home to 41 green buildings, the fourth largest figure for any state in the country. Of them, 39 are in Bangalore.

Tenders Skipped; KRIDCL To Upgrade Roads & Sewerage

Bangalore: It’s raining goodies for Bangalore city. With assembly elections round the corner and the city constituting the largest segment with 28 seats, chief minister Jagadish Shettar has quietly approved Rs 300 crore to develop and improve Bangalore’s roads and drainage. Each city MLA has been given Rs 15 crore for civil works. Since calling tenders would delay the award of works, the government has roped in the state-owned Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Corporation (KRIDCL), formerly Karnataka Land Army.

BANGALORE: Karnataka's forest cover shrunk by 797 sqkm between 2001 and 2011, in spite of massive afforestation programmes, the economic sector report of the CAG said.

The several causes of destruction include encroachment and shortage of staff in the forest department. The report said 67,096 hectares of encroached forest land had not been cleared as of March 2012, and vacancies among frontline staff affected management of forests.

People With Low Immunity Levels Need To Take Extra Precautions, Say Doctors

Bangalore: Influenza A (H1N1) or swine flu is back in Bangalore. The deadly virus which first surfaced in India in 2009, may not have claimed any life in the state so far this year, but the scale at which it is back has had warning bells ringing in the healthcare establishment. Do not panic, doctors say, because it is not necessary that every person contracting H1N1 will die. It is just that people with low-immunity levels must take extra precautions.
