Geneva: The European Union (EU) said on Monday that it would slash farm tariffs by 60% as part of a new global trade pact, a deeper cut than it has ever offered. EU trade commissioner Peter Mandelson said at the World Trade Organization (WTO) that the offer was meant to kick-start a week of crunch global commerce talks on a new global commerce pact.

Cairo: Global food shortages have placed the Middle East and North Africa in a quandary, as they are forced to choose between growing more crops to feed an expanding population or preserving their already scant supply of water.

Environmentalists rescued some 20 penguins covered in crude oil off Argentina's mid-Atlantic coast, two of which have died and four are in critical condition, the Patagonia Natural Foundation (FPN) has said. The Magallanes penguins were found far from their natural habitat for this time of the year, and were severely undernourished and suffered from dehydration, the environmental group said. FPN coordinator Carla Poleschi said the topmost concern was cleaning the birds thoroughly and feeding them back to good health.
