NEW DELHI: Delhi Development Authority will build 8,064 flats for slum dwellers at A-14, Kalkaji, in south Delhi. Construction for the mega slum rehabilitation project is expected to begin within a month or two. Sources said tenders have already been floated. "We will award this work soon," said a DDA official.

Work will be taken up in phases and the first phase will involve construction of about 2,200 flats. Details are still being worked out, but each building will have 15-16 floors. Sources say vertical growth is necessary to make the project feasibile. In phase-I, flats will be built on an empty plot near a slum.

NEW DELHI: Delhi surrendered its allotment of 2,083 mw, or more than half its current daily demand, from November 1 even as the city suffered widespread blackouts between second week of that month and continued till the first week this month.

While CM Sheila Dixit talked tough and ordered discoms to tie up supplies in advance to avoid similar outages in summer, senior state government officials blamed lower generation at state-run NTPC's power plant at Dadri as a result of fog disrupting rail service and delaying coal supply.

Households Not Sorting Waste Before Disposal, Contractors Doing A Poor Job

New Delhi: They were set up across several parts of the city with much fanfare in 2009 but the green and blue dustbins that were meant to facilitate waste segregation are being used like ordinary bins now. Even at the household level, waste segregation is a failed initiative. Of Delhi’s three municipal zones, one has issued a tender for waste collection and segregation as recently as last week. The other two corporations blame the project’s failure on lack of cooperation from residents and underperformance by private concessionaires.

Tourism & Culture Ministries Spar Over Ownership Of Plot Near Birla Mandir

New Delhi: A multilevel parking project in the heart of the city—near Birla Mandir on Mandir Marg—has been put on hold as two union ministries—tourism and culture—are fighting over ownership of the land. In 2011, the tourism ministry gave in-principle approval for the project, to be developed by New Delhi Municipal Council. But the ministry of culture claims a project for construction of Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Memorial Library was sanctioned in 2003 before the joint union ministry of tourism and culture split in two parts.

New Delhi: Green buildings help you reduce the electricity bill, save water and make your living space comfortable but now there is another incentive. Following a recent announcement by the lieutenant governor, green structures in the capital may be allowed a larger floor area ratio (FAR) compared to conventional buildings. FAR is the ratio of a building’s total floor area to the size of the land on which it is built. In Delhi, it varies according to the size of the plot.

“The LG has asked all agencies to convert maximum buildings into eco-friendly structures as green buildings are playing a significant role in minimizing the carbon footprint of cities. They require less energy both for cooling

Summons against two directors of a company also cancelled

The Delhi High Court has quashed a complaint and summons against two directors of a company being prosecuted by the Delhi Government’s Department of Food Adulteration under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act. Justice P. K. Bhasin quashed the complaint filed by the Department and the summons issued by the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, New Delhi, quoting a Supreme Court ruling that a director of a company cannot be prosecuted in a case unless he is specifically sought to be prosecuted on the ground that he was actually in charge of affairs of the company at the time of commission of crime by his firm.

“To recover past dues and to have adequate finances to be able to purchase power for the coming months”

Power consumers in the city will have to brace for spending more on their monthly bills as all three power distribution companies – the Anil Ambani-owned BRPL and BYPL and the Tatas-owned Tata Power -- want a further hike in power tariffs to not only recover their “past dues” but also “to have adequate finances to be able to purchase power for the coming months”.

The Delhi Cabinet on Monday decided to increase the number of subsidised LPG cylinders for the beneficiaries of the kerosene-free scheme from nine to twelve in a financial year.

At the meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, it was stated that since the Centre has decided to increase the limit of subsidised cylinders from six to nine across the country for a financial year, Delhi on its part would continue with the additional subsidy it had announced earlier on three cylinders for those covered under the kerosene-free Delhi scheme, which was launched in the Capital last year.
