New NABARD project for Bharatpur villages

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned a new project for development of villages through value addition in animal husbandry and innovations in agricultural practices in Bharatpur district. The emphasis will be on getting high returns on low investment.

Launching the project at Sheorana village in Sewar panchayat samiti of Bharatpur, NABARD Chief General Manager for Rajasthan Jiji Mammen said a transformation in the traditional methods of agriculture would pave the way for prosperity of farmers. At the same time, farmers should not depend too much on subsidies, he added.

Identifying BPL households - A comparison of methods

Exercises to identify households living below the poverty line have taken place three times, and a fourth one is under way. Though the latest method aims to improve upon previous methods, its empirical implications and precise justification are not yet clear. This paper empirically examines the Socio-Economic Caste Census methodology and compares it empirically with alternative proposals to show the choice of a particular methodology matters.

Rural schemes must be eco-friendly: Ramesh

Rural development minister Jairam Ramesh on Friday pitched for inclusion of green objectives and guidelines in the various social sector schemes of the rural development ministry like the flagship Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Scheme, Integrated Watershed Development Programme and Indira Awas Yojana.

“With an annual budget of around R75,000 crore, the ministry of rural development's schemes have an immense potential to contribute to the goal of sustainable poverty reduction and efficient use of natural resources,” Ramesh said while releasing a UNDP report on ‘Greening Rural Development in India’.
