The automotive industry is motoring ahead of its peers in terms of smart factory adoption and is set to increase investment by over 60% in the next three years, resulting in productivity gains of more than$160bn, according to a new research report from The Capgemini Research Institute.

This report, supported by Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, explores various aspects of India’s transition to electric mobility. It examines the impact it would have on the automotive value chain, particularly on the automotive components industry and the jobs in this sector.

Electric cars are about to go mainstream in Europe, and 2020/2021 is likely to be a tipping point for the market. Until recently, the EV market was limited to a niche of early adopters but tomorrow’s landscape will be very different as EVs enter a new phase and near the mass market.

This working paper compares the market and technological characteristics of electric cars in China and the United States, based on 2015 and 2017 data. The study finds that in both Chinese and U.S. markets a handful of cities accounted for the majority of electric car sales.
