ULFA speaks for rhino protection for a change

GUWAHATI: The anti-talks faction of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) has raised concern over the state of the conservation of one-horned Indian rhinoceros, the crowning jewel of the wildlife resources in Assam.

Turning wildlife conservationist for a change , the anti-talk faction of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) called upon the forest department of Assam to involve international experts in removing horns (de-horning) of rhinos and curb poaching of these majestic animals.

96% families living in good houses in Haryana

The Census 2011 data for Haryana has revealed that about 96 per cent of families were living in good or liveable houses while the remaining were living in dilapidated houses, Director (Census Operations) Neerja Sekhar said here on Thursday.

Releasing the Housing Census data at a Press conference here, she said that the percentage share of households having one married couple in a house remained 65.6 during the 2001 and 2011 Census.

Cars, jeeps, cooking gas to become dearer in Maharashtra

The Maharashtra government is set to implement some harsh monetary steps from next month, as finance minister Ajit Pawar envisaged a raise in tax rates across sectors in the 2012-13 budget presented on Monday. The proposals are expected to mobilise an additional Rs 600 crore, and make the state revenue-surplus by Rs 152.5 crore by the end of the coming financial year.

Ochrophora montana (Distant): a precious dietary supplement during famine in northeastern Himalaya

Cinnamon bug or seed bug, Ochrophora (= Udonga) montana (Distant) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is a serious pest of bamboo, feeds on developing seeds and is able to destroy all available seeds during massive outbreaks. Nevertheless, its outbreaks are occasional and were recently (2011) witnessed in Karanataka. Interestingly, periodic outbreaks of O. montana are known from the northeastern region (NER) of India, and largely corresponded with mass flowering of bamboos in Mizoram.

Wildfires in bamboo-dominated Amazonian forest: Impacts on above-ground biomass and biodiversity

Fire has become an increasingly important disturbance event in south-western Amazonia. We conducted the first assessment of the ecological impacts of these wildfires in 2008, sampling forest structure and biodiversity along twelve 500 m transects in the Chico Mendes Extractive Reserve, Acre, Brazil. Six transects were placed in unburned forests and six were in forests that burned during a series of forest fires that occurred from August to October 2005. Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) calculations, based on Landsat reflectance data, indicate that all transects were similar prior to the fires.

Fire devastates core area of Nagarahole National Park

The core area of the Nagarahole National Park, encompassing grassy swampland surrounded by bamboo groves, has been completely devastated by the fire that broke out early this week.

The air in the critical tiger and elephant habitat is hazy with smoke from smouldering embers. Forest watchers and temporary staff roped in from the local tribal community are still stomping out small flames emanating from the destroyed vegetation.
