Saying that the Western Ghats has been declared as one of the 18 biological hot spots of the world, Forest Minister Filipe Neri Rodrigues has said the Goa government has declared the entire Western Ghats corridor as protected area on account of the rich bio-diversity in the region.

Poornima Nataraj, Bangalore, Dec 17, DHNS:

Nagercoil: The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2010 as the International year of biodiversity in its 61st session in 2006 to help create awareness of the importance of biodiversity through activities and events.

Here we describe the bird community of Shingba Rhododendron sanctuary, a high altitude protected area (> 3200 m) and an Important Bird Area (IBA) in Sikkim in the Eastern Himalaya, India. Altogether 332 points were sampled using a point count method.

Over the past decade, biologists working in Ecuador's Yasuni National Park and the adjoining Waorani Ethnic Reserve, a 17,000-kilometer section of the Amazon Basin that was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1989, have documented Yasuni's remarkable biodiversity, providing evidence that its forest has the highest number of species on the planet, including an unprecedented core where there are overlapping world richness records for amphibians, reptiles, bats, and trees.

How do national-level actions overlap with global priorities for conservation? Answering this question is especially important in countries with high and unique biological diversity like Colombia. Global biodiversity schemes provide conservation guidance at a large scale, while national governments gazette land for protection based on a combination of criteria at regional or local scales.

The Meghalaya Environment and Forest Department gives us regular statistics and satellite images of the state of our forests. But how reliable are these images? Scientists are today stating upfront that reliable analysis of satellite radar images is limited by a lack of appropriate field observations.

Over the past decade, scientists on Borneo have found insects, plants, fish, and even a bird that are new to science at the rate of about three per month. This hidden diversity is not just on Borneo.

Coral reefs have exceptional biodiversity, support the livelihoods of millions of people, and are threatened by multiple human activities on land (e.g. farming) and in the sea (e.g. overfishing). Most conservation efforts occur at local scales and, when effective, can increase the resilience of coral reefs to global threats such as climate change (e.g. warming water and ocean acidification).

IMPHAL, Aug 19: Indigenous bio-resources, flora and fauna diversity of Manipur is currently under threat despite various projects and schemes for the conservation taken up.
Manipur falls in the region of Indo-Burma Biodiversity hotspots, which known as one of the most threatened biodiversity hotspots due to rapid exploitation and habitat loss.
