Work on infrastructure projects in the North-east is all set to gather momentum, with Ministry DoNER firming up a road map for finalisation of projects and preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), within the first 100 days of the UPA Government. The projects covering all eight North Eastern States (NES) are linked to the Rs 500 crore earmarked in the 2008-2009 Budget.

In the wake of the deteriorating condition of tourism in the country, the Punjab government has increased the budget allocation for the Tourism Department to Rs 163 million for 11 new schemes during the financial year 2009-2010.

The allocation for the previous year 2008-09 was Rs 100 million. The hike in allocation thus amounts to 63 percent.

With a large number of road development projects facing a resource crunch as well as cost overrun and delay in completion in many cases, the Road Transport and Highways Ministry is seeking to double its budgetary allocation for smooth functioning.

The government on Thursday withdrew the decision of levying carbon surcharge on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) by deleting the word "carbon" from the head of the levy. Now "surcharge" will be used for taxing petroleum products from the next financial year ie 2009-10 after severe drubbing from different quarters.

The government has allocated a mere Rs 1.5 billion for the Drought Recovery Assistance Programme (DRAP) and the Drought Emergency Relief Assistance (DERA) in the 2009-10 budget.

The government has reserved Rs 60 billion for the water sector in the budget for the year 2009-10, which amounts to 14 percent of the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).
