Jorhat has become the latest district in Assam to face the flood fury with nearly one lakh people being affected in the last two days, officials said today.

Lakhimpur in Brahmaputra valley and Cachar and Karimganj in Barak valley have been already hit by floods.



SILCHAR, May 4: The Forest Department of Cachar has decided to plant herbal plants on 400 hectares in the Dholai area of the district for which the first installment of Rs. 60 lakh has been sanctioned by the state government. State Minister for Urban Development Dinesh Prasad Gowala recently urged the farmers of Cachar district to seek assistance from the Agriculture and Irrigation departments in view of the prevailing drought-like situation.


Through an ethnobotanical survey of Barak-valley, about 150 naturally growing and frequently used medicinal plants were collected. Out of these collections, 24 plant species have been highly prioritised for conservation.

Bamboos are the important component in the traditional land use systems of Barak Valley. The traditional practice of village bamboo management in the homegarden system was studied in the Cachar district of Barak Valley, Assam. Utilization of village bamboos for fulfilling basic rural necessitate supports the maintenance of village bamboo diversity.
