The State Cabinet which met here today under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan took number of important decisions pertaining to renovation, strengthening and expansion of canals of Tawa project. The Cabinet also decided to increase the existing irrigation potential of the Tawa project up to three lakh hectare.

The Supreme Court has taken strong exception to the inordinate delay by the ministry of environment and forests in taking a decision on the command area plans (CAD) of the Indira Sagar and Omkareshwar Canal projects.

State needs 3,500 crore for the programme
In what will be a major boost to Punjab and its canal irrigation system that provides water to millions of farmers, the Centre may agree to pump in crores of rupees to upgrade the canals.

It is working to amend rules of the existing schemes to allow the state to get grants for the upgrade and relining of the canals.
