After several rounds of litigation on alleged illegal mining by a company owned by Karnataka's powerful minister G. Janardhan Reddy and his brothers in the Bellary area, the Supreme Court on Monday ordered a fresh survey of all their three mining fields and till then stayed mining activities and lifting of extracted raw material.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday banned mining in 157 mines in the Aravalli Ranges, in respect of which applications for renewal of lease have been pending with the Rajasthan government.

Concerned over the continued "rape" of the fragile Aravalli hills close to national capital, the Supreme Court on Friday banned mining activities by 157 miners in a huge tracks in Rajasthan, while direct- ing the preparation of satel- lite images of the entire Aravalli ranges spread over 50,000 sq km in the state.
