Moves fresh petition in Supreme Court for direction to neighbouring State

Tamil Nadu on Thursday filed a fresh petition in the Supreme Court for a direction to Karnataka to release 52.8 tmcft of water till February 2013 to save crops raised on 15 lakh acres. The State also wanted the court to properly define the ‘season’ to ensure that adequate water was released to protect the interests of farmers.

Kerala will convey its displeasure over the appointment of consultant to the monitoring committee for maintenance and repair at Mullaperiyar dam.

The Irrigation department has already conveyed the displeasure to the State Water Resources Department to be taken up with the Central Water Commission. As per the Supreme Court direction, the monitoring committee for maintenance will consist of three members, one each from Kerala and Tamil Nadu and one independent member from the Centre.

Even as the State received the lowest quantum of Cauvery flows during the southwest monsoon (June-September) in the last two decades, Union Water Resources Secretary Dhruv Vijai Singh is to visit Chennai and Bangalore on Thursday (October 4) to meet officials of the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka governments for discussions on the Cauvery issue.
