Hyderabad, April 12: The state government has taken up a study of the structural stability of all major dams in the state.

Keeping in view the unprecedented floods in Krishna River last October the government has set up an expert committee to look into the safety aspects of 16 major irrigation dams and 80 medium projects.

New Delhi: In a boost to the Ganga cleaning programme, the government has cleared projects worth Rs 1,394.11 crore for the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Uttarakhand.

Cleaning the Ganga has become the top priority of the government and projects have been put on a fast track.

The second meeting of the Empowered Steering Com- mittee of the National Ganga River Basin, com- prising Union minister, the Central Pollution Board and the Central Water com- mission, has cleared proj- ects worth Rs 1,394 crores.

The Central Water Commission has given its nod to the longstanding proposed Rs 146 crore Finna Singh Medium Irrigation Project for the Nurpur area. Talking to mediapersons here last night, local MLA Rakesh Pathania said the Central Ground Water Commission and the state government had to bear 90 and 10 per cent cost of the project, respectively, which would complete within two years.

Experts here view the present move of the State Government to amend the Assam Embankment and Drainage (E&D) Act, 1953 as a good chance to enlarge the scope of the legislation to cover many areas of activities connected with the Water Resources Department (WRD). The Act came into effect in 1954 and it is the basic legislation for the Water Resources Department.
