Environment ministry has given the green signal to a dam in Uttarakhand, throwing all caution to the wind. It will damage the ecosystem, force people to migrate and obstruct the movement of the snow leopard.
The Rishikesh-Badrinath Highway was blocked by landslips near Joshimath, while the Kedarnath route remained disrupted at Sirobagad by boulders that slipped downhill. The Rishikesh-Gangotri National Highway has again been struck by landslips at Sukhitop and Bhatwari.
The Uttarakhand Infrastructure Project Company (UIPC) will develop 180 MW capacity small hydro-power projects in the State. A 71 MW capacity power project is being developed in the first phase. The State Government will receive a premium of `36 crore from this in addition to which investment in Uttarakhand will also increase.
The study reports the impact of migratory livestock in the buffer area of Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. The cumulative impacts of livestock grazing, fuel wood extraction and other anthropogenic pressures on forest cover in and around camping sites have been analyzed using satellite data and field observations.
