THE discovery of coal in Tharparkar district has given the country an alternative source of energy. Sindh has coal resources at Lakhra, Thatta, Badin, Jhampir and Thar coalfields, but only Lakhra is operational with annual production of two million tons. Total coal resources are estimated to be 186.5 billion tons, which is ranked as lignite suitable for power generation.

The cost of transporting coal to Indian shores has come down by almost 70 per cent. "Earlier, the shipping cost from Indonesia was rupees one lakh, but now they are ready to transport it for just Rs 30,000," informed Rao.

Asian Development Bank (ADB) Country Director Rune Stroem has advised the Government of Pakistan to isolate the debt overhang of the power sector to overcome the energy crisis.

The Canadian government plans new regulations that will effectively phase out traditional coal-fired power stations, Environment Minister Jim Prentice said in an interview published on Wednesday.

He told the Globe and Mail newspaper that new coal plants would have to include technology to capture greenhouse gas emissions and inject them underground for permanent storage.
