Tens of billions of dollars must be spent on protecting millions of people living on the coasts of Asia Pacific if climate change-induced disasters are not to wreak havoc and eradicate decades of development, warns World Vision.

TAMLUK, Aug. 12: Members of the National Coastal Protection and Development Advisory Committee (NCPDAC) have been roped in to study the alarming trends of sea invasion along the coast of Digha-Sankarpur in West Bengal and suggest preventive measures.

After paying their visit to Sankarpur on 10 August, the committee members said that owing to the incomplete and faulty erection of the geo-tube wall along the coast of Sankarpur, it could not resist the tidal surge that hit the coast recently.

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government has requested the Ministry of Environment and Forest Government of India to draft a Tamil translation of the new Coastal Management Zone (CMZ) Notification 2008 in order to disseminate it among fishermen, the principal stakeholders of the coastal zone.

Visakhapatnam, July 16: The state secretary of CPI, Dr K. Narayana, said that their party was opposing the state government's proposal to develop Coastal Corridor between Itchapuram in Srikakulam district and Tada in Nellore district and launched a pro-CPI test campaign in this regard to create awareness among those living in the coastal areas about the ill effects of the proposal.

The ad hoc coastal development projects, which have been conceived and proposed in total disregard to environmental concerns, pose a serious threat to marine biodiversity and the livelihoods of 500,000 fishermen, besides putting human life at risk. The Sindh-Balochistan coast is very much vulnerable to cyclones and floods and implementation of such projects, without proper scrutiny by independent experts, is like inviting disaster.
