Bhubaneswar: A total of 3,602 farmers of Odisha committed suicide in the past 15 years. This was informed by Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharathy on Wednesday.

Plan for a fresh financial assistance comes at a time when the public debt in Maharashtra has already crossed Rs 3.85 lakh crore.

Six debt-burdened farmers, including a woman, committed suicide in the State in the past 24 hours.

As many as seven farmers committed suicide and one made an attempt to end his life in the State on Wednesday.

The present paper attempts to evaluate the economic conditions of the farm households of Yavatmal district of Vidarbha region. The district has reported an increasing number of suicides during the period of Jan. to Dec. 2011.This is in a striking contrast with other districts of Vidarbha in which suicide rates have been declining. The main thrust of the study is on ascertaining whether these farm suicides have taken place mainly due to the rural and agricultural credit problems.

Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday asked the Opposition not to link the incident involving farmer Gajendra Singh with the issue of land acquisition.
