NEW DELHI: To address the issue of solid waste disposal in the least polluting fashion, the Delhi Cabinet has approved setting up of bio-gas production facilities that would use bio-degradable waste through the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre-developed Nisargruna technology.

The Delhi Cabinet has given an in-principal approval for setting up the 750-MW Pragati-II power plant at Bamnauli, a project that has been under discussion for a long time.

The country-wide Market Assessment Study of Solar Water Heaters carried out in 2009 under the UNDP/GEF Project identified high potential States and Regions. This study focuses on five states/regions which are likely to contribute 49% of the SWH realizable potential up to 2022. These are: Maharashtra,  Gujarat,
Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, National Capital Region (NCR).

One of the longest serving power plants in Delhi, Rajghat power plant, will be shutting down soon. The Delhi government had decided to down curtains on this coal-based power plant ahead of the Commonwealth Games to remove the polluting unit in the heart of the city, and provide to residents a recreational area in its place.

In line with Delhi's 'Climate Change Agenda 2009-1', the city's plans for renewable energy got a boost when Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit inaugurated a 1 MW of solar powered electricity generation plant on December 21, 2010. The solar plant - set up on Lawrence Road at Keshavpuram in north Delhi and installed by TATA BP Solar - is an initiative by North Delhi Power Ltd (NDPL).

Despite no budget allocation for the Bamnauli power project in the current financial year 2010-2011, the Delhi Government is all set to appoint NTPC as Project Management Consultant for the Pragati Power Project phase II (750 mw-800 mw) at Bamnauli.

The solar powered UV disinfection plant was developed and installed at Haiderpur Waterworks, Delhi Jal Board. It was evaluated for treatment of microbial contamination of western Yamuna canal water for different microbial count and turbidity and flow rates.
