The joint venture of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) and NTPC is likely to put up 700 Mw of pressurised heavy-water-based nuclear power plant at Bargi in Madhya Pradesh or Kunharia in Haryana

The Department of Atomic Energy has launched an extensive survey of atomic minerals in Karnataka.

The Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) under the Department of Atomic Energy is conducting heli-borne geophysical surveys over the parts of Belgaum, Bagalkot and Bijapur districts in the State and Kolhapur district of Maharashtra.

Officials in the atomic energy establishment have expressed the apprehension that the delay in the nuclear liability bill is almost certain to derail the schedule of setting up new nuclear power plants in the country.

The November 2009 exposure of employees at the Kaiga nuclear power plant to tritiated water is not the first instance of high radiation exposures to workers. Over the years, many nuclear reactors and other facilities associated with the nuclear fuel cycle operated by the Department of Atomic Energy have had accidents of varying severity.

The tritium poisoning episode highlights grave safety lapses and the urgent need for an independent nuclear regulator.

Choosing a low-carbon path, as the government seems to be committing itself to at the negotiations, will impose huge costs on India.

Even as the first tranche of imported nuclear fuel is set to be used for the Rajasthan atomic power station, there is already a turf battle underway on who should regulate the tariffs.
