The effluent and emission standards for oil refineries were notified under Environment (Protection) Act in the years 1986 and 1990, respectively. These standards were same for old & new refineries and considered only few parameters. There was need to include additional parameters viz. Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), etc.

Hundreds of people on Wednesday staged a demonstration in the city's Pakka Garha locality against the district government's failure to lay a sewerage system here despite repeated appeals by locals to the authorities over the last several years.

The protesters, who were carrying banners and placards inscribed with their demands, raised slogans against the district government. They said there was no drainage and sewerage system in their locality and the sewerage water was entering their houses.

Banking heavily on the implementation of the interceptor sewer-system along three major drains to "clean' Yamuna, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday asked Engineers India Limited (EIL), which is engaged in laying the interceptor lines, to complete work by 2010 end.

Residents of Lone village in the district blocked traffic on the road connecting Narwana with Tohana this morning over the "failure' of the authorities concerned to drain out stagnant dirty water from the area. Traffic came to a halt for about 30 minutes from 9 am after the protesters, including women and children, staged a sit-in on the highway. The protesters alleged that the authorities had not paid any attention towards their grievance and this had forced them to come on the road.
