The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) is to receive over Rs 179 crore from the State Government on account of outstanding shares of various taxes, etc., under the provisions of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation Act, 1971. The Corporation was to receive around Rs 179 crore from the Government on March 31, 2006.

The Sindh High Court Sukkur bench has directed the Sindh Environment Department to test the quality of drinking water being supplied in Sukkur and submit a report within a week. The bench, comprising Justice Dr Rana Mohammad Shamim and Justice Farrukh Zia G. Shaikh, issued these directives on Wednesday, on a petition filed by a Sukkur-based journalist, Lala Asad Pathan, through his lawyer, Ghulam Shabbir Shar, stating that the water being supplied in Sukkur was contaminated and unfit for human consumption.

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board has decided to levy a 15 per cent VAT on water bills and to increase the charges for new connections and services from April 5 without notifying the consumers.The consumers who use less than 25 units were exempted from the VAT hitherto and a 10 per cent VAT was charged from those who consume more than 25 units.

A Decision Support System (DSS)on bio-drainage for reclamation of salt affected and waterlogged lands was developed using Visual Basic (VB) protocols. The DSS permits the user to interactively enter input information viz., the area available for plantation, average annual rainfall, initial and desired water table depth, soil type and the plantation type.

The United States has funded an 8-kilometer road and drainage system, which was opened today in Pottuvil, Ampara. The US Embassy in Colombo said its United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) funded the project to construct a low maintenance, durable road system and drainage structure throughout the Pottuvil Division. In the past, the roads flooded and became almost impassable, the Embassy said, adding that the finished roads have had a major impact on Pottuvil by reducing dust in the town and increasing locals' access to essential services, including schools, health clinics and places of worship. The project also created jobs and experience in the area. For the opening ceremony, USAID and UNOPS welcomed representatives from local government and the community.
