LUCKNOW: In a massive energy conservation drive, use of compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) has been made compulsory in government buildings, aided institutions, corporations and autonomous bodies in Uttar Pradesh. An order to this effect was issued by the State government on July 15. It has been estimated that with the use of CFL, consumption of energy would be cut down by about 10 per cent.

CHENNAI: Acknowledging that the State is suffering from power shortage of 1,000 megawatt (MW), Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami on Friday announced that the scheme of "power holiday' will come into force from Monday.

In Chennai, the supply would be disrupted for one hour a day. The city would be classified into eight divisions and each division would not have supply for an hour. Other municipal corporations and municipalities would have to go without supply for two hours.

IBM on Friday announced the launch of the second phase of Project Big Green (PBG 2.0) in India, and also introduced new modular data centres it said can reduce energy consumption by as much as 50%. A national-level workshop on promoting Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) is being organised by the Haryana Renewable Energy Department in collaboration with Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) of the Union Power Ministry on July 11 at Gurgaon. Haryana Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary, Renewable Energy and Power, Ashok Lavasa said the workshop is aimed at highlighting the issues of energy efficient and design, create awareness about ECBC, technological options and project achievements made in energy efficiency in building operational strategies.
