Ratia (Fatehabad): The wild life conservation department has swung into action after crocodiles were spotted in the Ghaggar, passing through the town, near Kanwalgarh village, on Monday.

While two crocodiles were seen sitting on an elevated sandy place on the bank of river on Monday, local people said they had spotted at least five-six crocodiles in the river.

The detection of cases of dengue in some new areas of the state has become a cause of concern for the health authorities.

Dengue, which is spread by the bite of aedes mosquitoes, was common in the national capital region of the state till recent years.

However, this year several other districts of the state like Fatehabad, Sirsa, Bhiwani and Hisar have come under its grip.

Tohana town in Fatehabad district has been the worst hit where as many as 87 cases of suspected dengue have been detected this year.

Detection of two cases of dengue at Dhangar village near here has put the the health authorities on the alert. Both patients are schoolchildren and have been admitted to Agroha Medical College for treatment.

The patients, Rinku (12) and Sumesh (10), have been suffering from high fever for past some days and on testing their blood samples they were found deficient in platelets, an indication of dengue.

The collapse of a part of the bridge over the Ghaggar river near Ratia town in the district within days of it being declared fit for use has exposed the working of the public works department. The bridge was opened for vehicular traffic only last week and a part of it caved in yesterday. Poor repairs whereby the contractors filled the chasm created during the last accident with soil and stones without its proper compression is said to be the reason behind yesterday's incident. Sources said the authorities had blacklisted the contractor.

The district authorities today decided to launch a special campaign to issue job cards to villagers under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS). The authorities have also announced that work on 30 projects will begin in 30 of the 240 villages in the district on June 10. The Tribune had highlighted the problems being faced by villagers in the district, where of the 25,000-odd aspirants, only 1,677 had been able to get job cards.

Its good news for the farmers of Haryana, who have to bear burgeoning losses, amounting up to Rs 55,000 crore per year, due to lack of proper post harvest management system in the state. The Haryana State Agricultural Marketing Board (HSAMB) has planned to develop collection centres, commodity hubs and terminal Markets across the state to reduce these losses and increase the price realisation for the farmers.
