PANJIM: The state will have a 70-75 day total fishing ban with the intention of conserving fish resources, allow for a sufficient spawning period and possibly increase the catch Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said while speaking on behalf of Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado who was not present in the Assembly.

Replying to the discussion on demands for grants, Parrikar stressed that it was absolutely necessary that there is a ban to ensure that the carrying capacity of the sea is maintained.

SRINAGAR: The State Level Sanctioning Committee (SLSC) headed by Chief Secretary Madhav Lal, approved the Action Plan 2012-13 for Rs 112.08 crore under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) in a meeting held here Thursday.

Under the Plan Rs 12 crore has been earmarked for implementation of vegetable initiative for urban clusters of the state, Rs 50 crore for Saffron and Rs 14.91 crore for Development of Diary, Goatry, fisheries, sheep and poultry.

Action plan will be submitted to Union Ministry

Introduction of a “climate-tailored agricultural management” system, preservation of ecologically important biomes, and development of water bodies are some of the strategies proposed by the State to overcome the impact of climate change. The strategies have been listed in the State Action Plan for Climate Change, prepared by the Department of Environment and Climate Change. The strategic plan, with a projected financial outlay of Rs.1,000 crore, is being circulated among various stakeholders.

MARGAO: Just 20 days to go for the controversial land acquisition proceedings to finally lapse, land acquisition officials are in a quandary whether to go ahead or allow the acquisition of land admeasuring 30,000 sqare meters for expansion of the Cutbona fishing jetty to lapse.

Following outcry by Velim villagers over the acquisition of land for a fish meal plant cum jetty expansion, the government had on September 1, 2011 ordered to keep the land acquisition proceedings in abeyance.

Fisheries expert and marine scientist Sanjeeva Ghosh has demanded core changes to the project report for the proposed seaport at Vizhinjam, warning that the construction activities for the port would impact on the marine ecosystem and the livelihood of the fishing community and pose a serious setback to beach tourism.

Pointing out that the project would lead to significant shoreline changes in the area, Mr. Ghosh, former Additional Director of Fisheries, Kerala, demanded a scientific and technical review of the proposal.
