New Delhi: Waking up to the dangers associated with the prevailing practice of artificial ripening of fruits, the ministry of health & family welfare has shot off letters to state authorities to raise their vigil against the use of carbide gas for ripening fruit.

NEW DELHI: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has asked the States and Union Territories to ensure prevention of use of carbide gas for premature ripening of fruits.

Due to increased accessibility to information, growing public awareness and enhancement of the State PFA (Prevention of Food Adulteration Act) enforcement machinery, the sale of sub-standard and adulterated food has come down considerably, but pulses, milk etc., are some of the items that still are most adulterated.

Continuing its raids on illegal ripening of mangoes for the second day on Thursday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorities raided outlets in Ponda and Mapusa and seized 11 tonnes of mangoes.
According to Food and Drug Administration Director Salim Veljee, the FDA officials sealed three godowns in Ponda, two in Upper Bazaar and one at Curti, and one in Mapusa.
