Aug. 17: The UPA government is considering setting up food security tribunals at all levels of governance to fix accountability and ensure a foolproof delivery system under the proposed Food Security Act.

The issue is being considered by the Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) seeking to fix responsibility on the official machinery implementing the said act.

The proposed legislation on food security has the potential to serve as a catalyst for action and it is an opportunity for the State to define the scope of the right to food and mandate robust protection for this right. It can cement the gains made by litigation, but it should not be restricted to that.
