The bumper production of potato has led to a glut-like situation in Punjab and if immediate measures are not taken, nearly 1 lakh tonnes of the produce will rot in the next 15 days. The government may also find it difficult to dispose of the over 16 lakh tonnes of potato kept in cold stores.

State Agriculture Minister Pramila Rani Brahma today told the Assembly that the State Government was according priority to cold storages and securing market linkage for the farmers so that they got due remuneration for the produce without getting exploited by middlemen.

JAJPUR: An increased production of brinjals in Jajpur district has spelt doom to its farmers as the high output had brought down their prices.

Besides, there is no cold storage for preservation of brinjal and no industry for its biproducts.

The main reason for the current surge in food prices is the supply shock due to the drought in 2009 and the carry-over effect of the low growth of food production in 2008-09. As the frequency of such shocks is expected to rise, India needs to have an effective food management strategy to deal with these episodes.

The food subsidy burden increased 82% primarily because of the increase in minimum support price.

Soil moisture, rising temperature may affect output.

The buffer stocks of wheat are already close to 20 mt, nearly five times the minimum stock norms for this time of the year.
