GUWAHATI, Aug 18: Very recently the Early Birds had submitted an application to the office of the Chief Conservator of Forest (Wild Life) under RTI Act, 2005 about the status of Amchang Wild Life Sanctuary at the outskirts of Guwahati and the reply thereof had revealed tantalizing facts.
The report stated that the State Public Information Officer for the department, A Rabha, Conservator of Forest (WL) had admitted that out of 7864.10 hectares of land, 770.0 hectares area are under human occupation, almost 10 per cent of the total land of the sanctuary.

is said to be the farmer's friend. The friends of the forester include insects,
birds, squirrel, rabbit, monkey, deer, gaur (Indian bison), bear and elephant, to name
a few. It is known that herbivores play a significant role in forest ecology by dispersing seeds through their eating, migratory and other habits. They disperse seeds as part of a natural ecological cycle and strengthen the forest ecology by ensuring the diversity and density of trees in the forests. (Correspondence)

In a landmark judgement, the Karnataka High Court on Thursday ordered a total ban on mining activities in forest areas.

Hearing a petition by MSPL Ltd, a Hospet-based mining firm, questioning the mining lease issued by the state government to a private company on March 15, 2003, Justice Shylendra Kumar quashed the lease. The Court observed that the State had neglected the Forest Conservation Act 1983 and Karnataka Forest Act 1963 while issuing the notification, and suggested nationalisation of mining activities.

Some 225,000 square kilometres of Ontario's boreal forest have been set aside in the biggest conservation initiative in Canada's history. But mining and logging will still be permitted, with strict regulations, in the region.
