LUCKNOW: The forests in the state will be managed through public-private-partnership (PPP) in a big way now. Though the PPP model in forest management was introduced about a decade back in the state, a big chunk of international funding that forest department has got of late will help. Government alone cannot conserve forests.

In times like these, when forests are being cut down indiscriminately, there is still hope. Take the residents of Yalakundli, 22 kms from Sagar (on the Keladi-Kagodu road). The forest in the middle of the town (called Naga bana) is fiercely protected by villagers here. Also, there are temples in the forest, and the villagers believe it is the deities here that protect the forests.

MUMBAI: Following several PILs filed in the Bombay high court, the state revenue department has declared 1,806 hectares of privately owned mangroves in the city as forests. The notification was issued by divisional commissioner S S Sandhu on February 24.

"With this move preservation of mangroves can be carried out like a forest. Simply put, such areas cannot be developed,'' Sandhu said.

Delhi Government gave permission to cut 30,863 trees in the last three years with a condition that 2.99 lakh saplings will be re-planted by applicants, but neither the target could be reached nor the balance plantation charges of over Rs six crore recovered.

New Delhi: Despite a Supreme Court order for status quo on the Aravali Hills and Haryana mining matters, a surprise check by the conservator of forests on Sunday revealed that constructions are still on in the prohibited areas.

Tribal farmers in India are being encouraged to plant underutilised indigenous wild trees on their land. This is in response to the fact that, in recent times, farming systems in central India have become less diversified and natural resources are becoming scarcer. Tribal communities living in remote areas are specially affected.
