Karwar: The Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) has passed an order asking the government to regulate the movement of iron ore lories in Uttara Kannada district. A copy of the order was released to the press here on Tuesday by petitioner Kishore Desai.

Even as residents of Quepem are fighting against operating of mining transport via Quepem town, a scooterist had a lucky escape from dashing against an overloaded mining truck, which lost control at the speed breaker near Tilamol Church.

The State Government has indicated that it is very serious about curbing accidents happening in the areas having concentration of mining traffic and stringent measures are in the offing.

Residents of Quepem on Monday strongly condemned the decision of South Goa Collector G P Naik to allow mining trucks to operate via Quepem town from 6 am to 6 pm.

The South Goa district magistrate has ordered erection of five check posts to monitor mining traffic in the Sanvordem, Curchorem, Tilamol, Ambaulim stretch of the road from Monday.

The South Goa District Magistrate has asked requested mining transporters to reduce the volume of truck traffic to 40 per cent on the Tilamol-Curchorem-Sanguem route to avoid accidents on the narrow stretch of road.
A final decision will, however, be taken at the meeting of the ore transporters and mine owners with the Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat later in the evening.

South Goa Collector G P Naik has issued a notification prohibiting mining traffic along the Quepem-Curchorem road from April 7 to April 10.
In his notification issued on Tuesday, Naik stated that mining traffic has been prohibited along the Quepem-Curchorem road from April 7 to April 10 due to the ongoing SSC exams.

The iron ore transportation issue in Orissa has taken a new turn with the district administration prohibiting the road movement of the ore along National Highway 215 that connects the iron ore-rich Keonjhar district with Paradip port and the rest of the country.

The High Court has directed the State government to issue transit pass for transportation of minerals to Kumaraswamy Mineral Exports Private Limited.

The company has a 20-year lease on 82.55 hectares of land in Yeshwantnagar in Sandur taluk for mining.
