Sand Contractors, Sand Boat Owner-Workers and Building Materials Transporters Joint Action Committee is completely in favour of installation of GPS to sand transporting lorries and as a matter of fact, 570 lorry owners have registered themselves in the committee, out of which 500 owners have already paid the advance money to install GPS, informed Joint Action Committee President Mayur Ullal.

THE clampdown on illegal mining in the mineral-rich states of Karnataka, Goa and Orissa has resulted in collateral damage by way of lower truck sales.

According to people connected with mining and truck-makers, sales of specialised trucks and tippers that are used to ferry minerals from pit heads to ports has fallen sharply in the past month by 40-50%.

The State Government imposed a toll of Rs 500 on trucks transporting iron ore in the mining district of Bellary beginning Saturday.

Acting on a Government Order the Public Works Department officials have begun collecting the toll in Sandur.

Transport is the sector with the highest final energy consumption and, without any significant policy changes, is forecast to remain so. In 2008, the IEA published 25 energy efficiency recommendations, among which four are for the transport sector.

The heavy traffic of iron ore-laden trucks plying on the two national highways of Karwar district has taken lives and limbs of many people.

All the trucks transporting sand from the district should have Global Positioning System (GPS) within a week. Those lorries which do not have GPS will not be allowed to transport sand, warned Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj.
