Shimla: The 1,500 MW Nathpa-Jhakri Hydro-Electric power project remained shut for the fifth consecutive day on account of high silt level, hampering power supply to seven northern States. The silt level was recorded 5,500-6,000 particles per million (ppm) on Sunday, which is higher than the permissible 4,000 ppm, forcing closure of the project for fifth day, Deputy General Manager of public sector Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) told PTI.

The Income-Tax department's investigation wing has told the Himachal Pradesh government that it may have awarded two hydel projects worth Rs 6,500 crore in Kinnaur dstrict to a ghost company which took funding from an Adani group firm. In a report to principal secretary (power), the Shimla office of the I-T department has questioned the antecedent of Brakel Kinnaur Power (P) Ltd and doubted the ability of the company's alleged parent, Brakel Corporation NV, to handle the Jangi Thopan and Thopan Jowari projects.

The state-run NTPC, which has launched the capacity addition programme of 25,000 mw, for the 11th Plan, has already started preparations to add nearly 7,000 mw in the hydro sector by the end of the 12th Plan (2016-17). NTPC's investment in the eight upcoming hydro projects would be around Rs 35,000 crore.

As the state is working on bringing out its first-ever environment policy, environmentalists working in Himachal have expressed concern over increasing activities of hydro-power production, cement industries and indiscriminate mining and have asked the state for a serious review while framing the policy.

Shimla - Dhumal meets Power Minister in Delhi The Union Ministry of Power has left the issue of trifurcation of the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEB) on the state government. In a meeting of Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal and Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde in Delhi today, the issue of trifurcation of the HPSEB came up, where Shinde is reported to have given the state a free hand on the issue.

Speaking at World Convention on Climate Change at Palampur in Himachal Pradesh, former prime minister of Sweden Dr Ola Ullsten said that the key to long-term environment conservation and sustenance was to examine and incorporate pricing mechanisms for natural resources. Addressing policy makers, civil society groups and environment experts at the convention held recently, Ullsten spoke about the increasing chasm between the supply of financial and natural resources.

The high court has imposed a ban on felling of trees in all forest areas, including private forestlands, except in accordance with the order passed by the Apex Court. The court further directed that felling in all forests would remain suspended, except in accordance with the working plans of the state government approved by the Central Government.
