The aim of this study is to analyse the amount of atmospheric pollution caused by vehicular traffic and the public strike, during which vehicular traffic is highly curtailed, offers an excellent opportunity for our purpose. The present study is carried out through systematic in situ measurements of particulate matter (PM), black carbon (BC) and carbon monoxide (CO) over the urban region of Hyderabad, India during two public strikes on 24 December 2009 and 18-21 January 2010.

This study deals with the effects of fireworks on the air quality over the major cities of India during the festival of light known as “Diwali”. The effects of firecrackers during the festival was assessed from the ambient concentrations of various air pollutants such as sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter (PM) with diameter less than 10 µm.

The levels of heavy metals are measured at different dumpsites with different distances and directions under the jurisdiction of Greater Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad for ascertaining the soil and groundwater quality and forecasting as a part of integrated municipal solid waste (MSW) management study.

Delhi with fast-growing rate of urbanisation is the second most water-stressed cities in the world according to this new research published in Global Environmental Change Journal which has mapped 500 large cities to determine how global urbanisation is affecting water supplies. Kolkata (6), Chennai (18), Bangalore (19) and Hyderabad (20) are also listed in this first global survey of the large cities’ water sources.
