The cause of the leak was traced to Tata Motors dumping an unused chlorine cylinder, once used by its water treatment plant, in the vicinity of the housing colony about 10 years ago. The chlorine started leaking after the cylinder rusted and its walls gave away due to the pressure of the gas.

Central government has agreed to establish a Commission having special rights for Bhopal gas victims. Proposed commission would consider over different aspects of rehabilitation with consent of government of MP. It is a big achievement for the gas victims who had been staging dharna at Jantar Mantar in national capital Delhi for two months. Though all the three organisations of gas victims are not satisfied only with the establishment of the Commission, but it would prove a better platform to consider over their problems.

The Government has agreed to set up a panel to help victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas leak, which has till now killed more than 15,000 people. On Thursday morning, Minister of State in the PMO Prithviraj Chavan visited Jantar Mantar where the Bhopal survivors have been protesting for the last two months and read out a two-page statement authorised by the Prime Minister. The statement said India would press the US company which now owns Union Carbide to clean up the site.

The government has accepted "in principle' their demand to set up a commission to carry out medical, economic, social and environmental rehabilitation of the victims. However, dissatisfaction persists as demands of legal action against Union Carbide and Dow Chemicals are yet to be met.

At least 100 people were killed and scores injured when fuel from a pipeline ruptured by an earthmover building a road on the outskirts of Nigeria's capital Lagos caught fire, the Red Cross said last night. "About 100 people have so far been confirmed dead. We have rescued more than 20 people and taken them to hospital," said one Red Cross official. Most of the deaths and injuries resulted from a stampede caused by the fire.

Leak At Pakistan Atomic Energy Site Kills Two PAKISTAN: April 9, 2008 ISLAMABAD - A gas leak killed two people on Tuesday at a heavy water plant run by Pakistan's atomic energy agency in central Punjab province, a spokesman for the agency said. The leak at the Khushab heavy water plant took place during its annual maintenance. The plant was closed at the time. "The situation was immediately brought under control and two workers lost their lives while controlling the incident," a spokesman for Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) said.
