CORTALIM: The Goa State Pollution Control Board's (GSPCB) decision to hold the environmental public hearing for the proposed 7.2 MMTPA Iron-Ore Export Terminal at Mormugao Port has raked up a controversy.

The hearing is scheduled on July 24, which happens to be the day on which week-long Shree Damodar Bhajani Saptha festivities commence in the port town.

Jaipur: The state government on Monday filed a detailed report on the shops and sculpture manufacturers working in Khajanewalon Ka Rasta in the old Walled City and stated that no manufacturing work will be allowed as it has resulted in air and noise pollution.

The government also clearly stated before the court that no manufacturing unit will be allowed in the Walled City including Khajanewalon Ka Rasta, Bhindon Ka Rata and the adjoinging old places known as 'chhokri murtikar'.

Almost three decades after deadly gases spewed out of the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, the Union Cabinet has finally approved the proposal to airlift 350 tonnes of toxic waste from the defunct pesticide factory site to Germany for safe disposal.

Tuesday's Cabinet decision comes after attempts to dispose of the waste in several Indian plants were vociferously opposed by nearby residents. The Central government will pay Rs. 25 lakh to German firm GIZ to remove the waste.

JAIPUR: A division bench of high court has issued notice on a PIL over the non-deployment of water sprinkler system and other pollution control measures by the large number of stone crushers of Kaladera industrial area of RIICO at Jaipur.

The notices were issued on a PIL filed by one Lakhan singh alleging that a large number of stone crushers are operating in the Kaladera industrial area of RIICO and they are not using any safety measures as well as pollution control steps to check pollution caused by small sand particles after extraction from these stone mines.

Member of Parliament Maneka Gandhi has written to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan alleging that a company has begun illegal construction near Karnala bird sanctuary in Panvel.

In the letter, Gandhi said a private company had sought permission to set up a factory within 10 kilometres of the sanctuary, which houses 147 species of Indian birds and 37 migratory bird species, including some endangered species. She said the company intended to dispose its effluent into the sea.
