BHOPAL: Officials of the state have pleaded ignorance about reports that Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) had deemed Pithampur incineration facility as suitable for trial burning of the toxic wastes lying at the Union Carbide Bhopal plant.

Pithampur is among 21 TSDF sites, being evaluated for incineration of some 350 metric tons of toxic waste laying abandoned Carbide factory. Faced with opposition from local residents and villagers at Pithampur, the Madhya Pradesh government has contested incineration of Bhopal's toxic waste in the facility.

It is now two years since the Madras High Court delivered a landmark judgment ordering the closure of dyeing and bleaching units in the Tirupur knitwear cluster for polluting the river Noyyal for decades. The order was pronounced solely because the dyeing fraternity did not adhere to the zero liquid discharge (ZLD) norms despite the directions from the Supreme Court and High Court.

PANJIM: In an interesting development, M/s Axis Ltd has approached the Administrative Tribunal, Goa, challenging the Goa State Pollution Control Board’s decision to seal its premises, over the issue of 25,000 tons of hazardous waste lying at their site at Plot number L-2 and L-3, at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate.

M/s Axis has also challenged the Board’s decision to revoke the Consent to Operate, issued to the firm for the establishment of a unit to manufacture cement products at Plot No-3 on March 1, 2012. The appeal has been admitted by the Tribunal, which is likely to hear the matter on Monday.

Assistant commissioner of police, Rajesh Pathak said: “The nature of the gas is still a mystery. We have asked Gujarat Pollution Control Board to submit their report at the earliest but there is no intimation from the agency yet. GPCB collected samples from the drain in Narol. We have begun hunting for chemical factories which may have dumped effluents illegally, causing the gas emission from the sewer. Without this GPCB report, we cannot proceed against people responsible for this.”
