Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary (KWS) is situated in the Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh. In around 1993-1994, the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, after a thorough study found this forest to be a suitable habitat for the relocation of the Asiatic lion, now confined to the range of about 1800 sq kms of the Gir forest, its only current habitat in the world.

Gandhinagar: Gujarat Wild Life Advisory Board has in a unanimous resolution demanded funds from the Central government for lion conservation. The resolution, taken in a meeting on Monday, demanded that the Centre should take up lion conservation on the lines of Project Tiger.
The board in the resolution also said the Centre has been neglecting the lion conservation programme. Chief Minister Narendra Modi also called on the board members to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and make a representation to allocate funds for lion conservation.

The federal government has banned the import of tigers, lions and other big cat species.

According to highly placed sources, earlier, the federal government, following regular incidents of smuggling of big cats by certain wildlife traffickers, which were exposed by the media while the official regulators either remained unaware or were hand in glove with the traffickers, had refused to entertain any requests for permission from these traffickers for the import of big cats till their cases were disposed of.

At a time when the lion population is declining alarmingly in Africa, W National Park is haven to 200 lions, according to a 2001 estimation by the ecologist Mossa Alou.

Moli Haoussa, among the few African villages where human beings co-exist with the carnivore, is located 15 km from the park's boundary in Tamou Wildlife Reserve.

Bhopal, July 24: The Madhya Pradesh State Forest Department will be experimenting on zoo-bred lions. In an ambitious project, the State's Forest department will be adopting few pair of zoo lions for the purpose of breeding. And when they will litter, the cubs will be imparted training to adopt in the natural conditions - to kill a prey and survive.

On being trained, these cubs will be introduced in the Palpur Kuno Wild Life Sanctuary located in the Sheopur district of the Madhya Pradesh.
