Four Bar Headed geese nesting in a remote area in China have no idea that they are being tracked by scientists at the Aligarh Muslim University. Their movements from the time they arrived in India have been on surveillance thanks to the satellite collars that have been fitted to them in March.

LUCKNOW: A review meeting of the UP State Advisory Council was held on Monday to assess the environmental viability of the proposed Municipal Solid Waste plant at Kakori. The discussion, however, remained inconclusive, with SAC seeking additional details from UP Jal Nigam, the implementing authority for the plant.

LUCKNOW: The site for the proposed municipal solid waste management (MSW) project would undergo yet another environmental scrutiny on June 14, when the state environment directorate would look into objections pertaining to environmental threat from the project.

LUCKNOW: Come September and each honk in the city would register itself at the national level. With MoEF keeping its date with the ambitious `national ambient noise monitoring network' project, there are hardly any chances that city's high decibels will be missed. UPPCB has started "procuring equipment" to set up the network stations.

LUCKNOW: The ground water situation is fast deteriorating in the state. In the past four years, the areas under stress have almost doubled. In comparison to 138 blocks in 40 districts of UP under stress in 2004, the tentative figure of the blocks under stress has touched 218 blocks in around 60 districts as per the survey done by Groundwater Board in 2008.

LUCKNOW: In a fresh impetus to bettering urban infrastructure in major cities of the state, the government of India has named Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra, Kanpur, Meerut, Allahabad and Mathura as mission cities under the urban infrastructure and governance (UIG) scheme of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered that the status quo be maintained with regard to the Allahabad High Court's interim order restraining the Lucknow Development Authority from raising the fence so as to preserve the green belt near the city's Bhagidari Bhavan area.

LUCKNOW: The State Bank of India (SBI), Lucknow formally adopted the royal inmates of Lucknow zoo. The bank adopted a royal Bengal tiger and a white tiger on Thursday. The cheque for Rs 3,20,000 was handed over to the zoo director Renu Singh by BV Chaubal, CGM, SBI, Lucknow circle. The amount will be for the year-long food requirements of the two tigers.
