Most countries require an environmental impact assessment (EIA) before giving the green light to a mining project. EIA processes provide a valuable opportunity for citizens to participate in decisions
about mines.

Panchayat Minister, Manohar Azgaonkar has objected dumping of mining rejects on the highway sides at Porascadem in Pernem Taluka. This has resulted in dust pollution and lot of inconvenience to the villagers besides causing accidents, Azgaonkar added.

Mining Policy too late to save Jaintia Hills rivers

SHILLONG: In 1957, David Lean made the famous movie The Bridge on the River Kwai a British World War II film based on the emergency construction of a railway bridge for war purposes in Burma.

Jaintia Hills has its own river Kwai which is the latest to join the ranks of dead rivers.

Mining and processing of uranium ore was started in several parts of eastern Singhbhum, viz. Jaduguda, Bhatin and Narwapahar (Jharkhand) in 1968. Radioactivity in the mine tailings has to be consolidated so that it does not emanate in the atmosphere or enter the food chain.

PANAJI: The lawyers of mining company Vedanta on Wednesday assured the High Court of Bombay at Goa that the firm would remove the mining dumps at the edge of its mining lease at Advalpal village in north Goa.

Various mining projects have been proposed in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. The proposed mining area seeks to destroy about 200 sq km. in the Western Ghats part of the Sawantwadi and Dodamarg blocks of the district in the core of the northern Western Ghats.

Vegetation condition monitoring has been done from 1975 to 2000 in the waste dump of Haizhou opencast coalmine area, China, using remote sensing techniques with the objective of improving our understanding of the temporal and spatial variation of vegetation recovery in the mining dump.
