The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced strict action against those who fail to segregate garbage and those found burning waste. The PMC staff too has been warned of action if found burning waste.

The decision follows efforts by the National Society for Clean Cities (NSCC) to persuade the civic body officials to take steps in the matter.

MUMBAI: Following complaints of a spurt in cases of jaundice and flu from a residential pocket along S V Road in Borivli, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation ( BMC) has collected water samples to check for possible contamination.

Residents of the housing societies in the pocket, located opposite the police lock-up, have complained of illnesses due to dirty water supply.

The responsibility of municipalities to provide crucial services is being increasingly passed on to the resident welfare associations located in middle and upper middle class areas in cities. Similar tools of intervention are absent in the slums and low-income neighbourhoods and even the local ward committees fail to represent their needs and aspirations.
