The Government on Wednesday ruled out a blanket ban on plastic bags and said waste management at the local level should be improved to ensure that the waste did not become an environmental hazard. Replying to a question on plastic waste, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said in the Lok Sabha that ''a blanket ban on plastic bags is not advisable.''

Against the backdrop of concerns over Mayapuri radiation incident, the government on Wednesday said the hazardous waste management rules should be strengthened especially at the port level to ensure that such material was not dumped in the country.

NEW DELHI: A full-fledged probe into the incident of radioactive material being found in the scrap at Mayapuri in west Delhi earlier this month is under way. The scrap apparently came from abroad, Minister of State for Atomic Energy Prithiviraj Chavan told the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
