The nationwide Lockdown, in effect since the midnight of 24 March in view of COVID-19 pandemic, has resulted in significant improvement in air quality in the country, as revealed by data analysis and comparison of data for time before enforcement of restrictions.

The nationwide Janta Curfew on March 22, 2020 and lockdown since March 24, 2020, have resulted in significant improvement in air quality in the country, as revealed by data analysis and comparison of data for time before enforcement of restrictions.

As per data from Central Bureau of Health Intelligence (CBHI), State / Union Territory (UT) wise details of cases of Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI),in the country during the years 2016-2018 are given in Annexure. In January 2019, Government launched National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) to tackle the problem of air pollution in a comprehensive manner with targets to achieve 20 to 30 %reduction in PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations by 2024, keeping 2017 as base year.

Air pollution constitutes the most pressing environmental health risk facing our global population. It is estimated to contribute toward 7 million premature deaths a year, while 92% of the world’s population are estimated to breathe toxic air quality (WHO, 2016). In less developed countries, 98% of children under five breathe toxic air.

This report reveals the cost of air pollution from fossil fuels and highlights solutions that can protect our health and benefit our communities. Air pollution generated by burning fossil fuels is attributed to approximately 4.5 million premature deaths worldwide every year, the report shows.

Recently there have been multiple discussions about air quality improvements in Delhi and some reports also mentioned that Delhi has shown a 25% decrease in air pollution levels between 2016-2018 compared to the 2012-2014 .

Particulate matter is the main air pollutant in China, especially in Xi'an in recent years. Since 2013, the WRF-SMOKE-CMAQ model system has been used to build an air quality model system for daily air quality forecasting in Xi'an.

Hyderabad: Women exposed to higher air pollution levels are more at risk of hypertension, says a recent study. The study covered 5,531 adults from 28 peri-urban villages near Hyderabad.

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Air pollution in 39 smog-prone northern Chinese cities soared in February, making it increasingly unlikely they will meet their annual winter air quality targets, Reuters analy

Question raised in Lok Sabha on National Clean Air Programme, 08/02/2019. Smart cities framework is being used to launch NCAP in 43 smart cities falling in the list of 102 non-attainment cities. State wise list of cities is enclosed as Annexure I. Taking into account the available international experiences and national scientific and technical studies, mid-term target for reduction of PM2.5 and PM10 concentration by 2024 forms an integral component of the NCAP. This is keeping 2017 as the base year for comparison of concentration.
