NEW DELHI: In what could prove to be a setback to India's growth in the power sector and reflects poorly on its performance, the Planning Commission has reduced the power generation capacity addition target by over 20 per cent to 62,374MW for the 11th Plan (2007-12) from the original 78,577 MW, in its mid-term review.

Pointing out that the average power tariff charged from the consumers in India was one of the highest in the world, the Planning Commission has lashed out at the distribution utilities for their poor power procurement planning and portfolio optimisation skills.

Rajasthan Energy Minister Jitendra Singh on Thursday said the State Government had sanctioned two power projects in the public sector and three in the private sector in 2009 with the target to produce 4,280 MW power and had so far spent Rs.56.92 crore on the ventures in the public sector.

To help in policy development, awareness creation, as well as training and capacity building for solar energy is the main focus of Solar Thermal Federation of India (STFI).
