For long, the Central Electricity Authority and experts in the power sector have been crying hoarse about the economic sense in taking up renovation and modernisation (R&M) of India's aging power plants, but to no avail. But now, environmental imperatives have given R&M a renewed sense of purpose.

''The Karnataka government will seek the much needed support from the Union government towards the establishment of gas-based power plants in the State,'' said Minister for Energy K S Eshwarappa.

State government on Thursday signed two memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with private companies which might pave way for generation of much needed 2380 mega watt (MW) power.

Neyveli Lignite Corp. (NLC) on Wednesday said it plans to venture into the power generation and mining industry business.

NLC plans to participate in development of coal blocks allotted to the state governments under the public private partnership with state government undertakings, a release said.

Athena, Jaypee bag Kynshi projects

SHILLONG: Congress-led MUA government has decided to hand over two power projects of 100 MW each to private parties. Athena Private Ltd has bagged the Kynshi Stage I, while the Jaypee Group will execute the Kynshi Stage II project.

The Cabinet took this decision in a hurriedly convened meeting here on Monday.
