Amid worsening climate change-related problems for small island states, Tuvalu has established a national goal of being powered entirely by renewable energy sources by 2020.

Apart from granting Rs 1,000 crore as compensation for the Aila affected people, the Centre ahs also sanctioned Rs 1.5 crore for provision of solar lanterns to the Aila-affected blocks in the Sunderbans area.

The ministry of new and renewable energy has sanctioned this grant of Rs 1.5 crore to provide 14,000 solar lanterns to the Aila-affected people of Hingalgunj, Gosba and Patharpratima.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday sought German assistances for tapping all sources of renewable energy in the country and facing the challenges of global climate change.

She wished for the cooperation when German Ambassador Frank Meyke made a farewell call on her at the PM's office in the morning.

Former president of India, APJ Abdul Kalam, on Monday said the co-basin countries in the region should develop an efficient water management system for their mutual benefit.

India will need to accelerate its pace towards clean energy despite its gauntlet that its per capita emissions of Earth-warming greenhouse gases (GHG) will never exceed those of the developed countries, energy analysts have said.
