Congress general secretary, Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday night, stressed the significance of alternative energy sources for comprehensive prosperity even in interior regions. He was addressing a congregation of Self-Help Group (SHG) members at a village in Unchahar of Rae Barei dstrict.
The Department of Science and Technology of the Central government, under the Integrated Rural Energy Planning Programme (IREP), has taken over the maintenance of nearly 1,000 micro hydel projects abandoned across the state. Around 900 of these are totally defunct.
The rural population in India does not have access to reliable energy. India has millions of tonnes of unused and available biomass waste. This loose biomass is currently treated as a waste with no economic value. It is often burnt inefficiently in open fields, causing air pollution.
