SALEM: The Panamarathupatti Lake, a picturesque water spread located near the city, will complete 100 years this year.

The lake, which has a massive water spread area of 2,139 acres, was built during the British period. The government in 1908 approved the scheme primarily to make it as a source of water supply. It was an engineering marvel in those days.

SALEM: Over 50 residents of wards 36 and 37 attempted to block the traffic in Ammapet here on Monday protesting against the supply of contaminated water.

They claimed that the Salem Corporation was supply drinking water mixed with sewage for the past few days.

SALEM: The indiscriminate dumping of solid waste into the Tirumanimutharu channel continues unchecked in the city, thus defeating the very purpose of implementing the river improvement project, for which the Salem Corporation has spent crores of rupees already.

SALEM: Police arrested three persons for hunting deer, boar and rabbits for meat in the forests abetting Harur in Dharmapuri district and Mottur near Ilampillai in Salem district on Wednesday. A gun was also seized from them.

THREE persons, including a theatre owner, were arrested on Wednesday for poaching de er and wild boar in the reserve forest area near Illampillai.

Even as the poachers were busy apportioning the flesh of the deer in a farm, a police team swooped down on them. They took into custody four persons and seized the flesh and the poached animal.

MARKING its silver jubilee on Sunday, the Salem Tree Club released a declaration that spells out eco-friendly solutions to day-to-day pollution. Pasumai Thayagam chairperson Sowmiya Anbumani received the first copy, which would be submitted to the government also.

PRIVATE powerloom owners in Tharamangalam in Salem district have agreed to contain noise pollution. An assurance to this effect was given to the First Bench comprising Chief Justice H L Gokhale and Justice R Banumathi, when a public interest writ petition from S Sakthivel and S Susheela came up before it on Tuesday.

SALEM: Traffic on the Salem-Bangalore National Highways was disrupted for nearly an hour on Monday when a group of residents from Narasothipatti and Kamarajar Colony blocked the road in protest against inadequate drinking water supply to their localities.
