CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, on Wednesday announced launching of a new scheme known as "Shiksha Deep' in the State.

Speaking at the celebrations of Rajiv Gandhi Akshya Urja Diwas at Panchkula near here, Mr. Hooda said that under this scheme, LED solar lanterns would be provided to those girl students of each school in every village who would rank first in their respective classes of 5, 8, 10 and 12. During this year, the innovative scheme would benefit 19,000 girls and cost Rs 3 crore.

PANJIM, AUG 20 -- A modern Renewable Energy Park will be established in Margao under Goa Energy Development Agency (GEDA) disclosed Chief Minister Digambar Kamat at a function held to commemorate Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas at Goa Science Centre, Miramar today.
The function coincided with the birth anniversary celebration of former Prime Minister of India late Rajiv Gandhi and was organized by Goa Energy Development Agency in association with Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India.

San Francisco-based Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) agreed last week to purchase power from two solar-panel manufacturers in the state. OptiSolar, based in Hayward, will build a 550-megawatt plant, to be accompanied by a 250-megawatt plant from SunPower of San Jose.

In a plan that would drastically remake New York City's skyline and shores, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg is seeking to put wind turbines on the city's bridges and skyscrapers and in its waters as part of a wide-ranging push to develop renewable energy.
The plan, while still in its early stages, appears to be the boldest environmental proposal to date from the mayor, who has made energy efficiency a cornerstone of his administration.

The power division has drafted a renewable energy policy with an ambitious target of meeting five per cent of total electricity demand by 2015 and 10 per cent by 2020 with renewable energy.
At an inter-ministerial meeting, which reviewed the draft on Monday, power secretary M Fouzul Kabir Khan asked officials concerned to specify in the draft the tentative generation of electricity from a certain renewable source.

There were limits to how green Bruce Letvin was willing to go. For years, the 53-year-old anatomy professor had wanted to install solar panels on his Manhattan Beach, Calif., home. But the up-front installation costs always outweighed the benefits for the environment and his conscience. This spring, however, he managed to work out green financing with the help of solar company SunPower.

Two solar power plants to be built in California together will put out more than 12 times as much electricity as the largest such plant today, a fresh indication that solar energy is starting to achieve significant scale.

The plants will cover 12.5 square miles, or 32 square kilometers, of central California with solar panels, and in the middle of a sunny day will generate about 800 megawatts of power, roughly equal to the size of a large coal-burning power plant or a small nuclear plant. A megawatt is enough power to run a large Wal-Mart store.

PG&E, a California power company, has placed an order for what are believed to be the world's two biggest photovoltaic solar farms, giving a strong endorsement to a technology that few power generators have yet considered to be ready for utility-scale use.

Between them the two farms, due to come on-stream in 2010 and 2011, are planned to generate 800 megawatts at peak capacity, or more than the 750 MW of the entire photovoltaic grid capacity in the US at the end of last year.

The world has an abundance of renewable energy to offer, the question is how to harness it. (Editorial)
