The state of Rajasthan was directed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). September 15, 2022 to pay compensation of Rs. 3,000 crores for the gaps in treatment of liquid waste/sewage and un-remediated legacy waste. The amount has to be deposited by the state in a separate ring-fenced account within two months, to be operated as per directions of the Chief Secretary and utilised for restoration measures.

Pollution and environmental degradation often worsen as countries develop and industrialize. The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis suggests that, initially, economic growth increases pollution up to a certain income threshold, and then it begins to decrease pollution. Pollution reduction is not inevitable, however.

Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Compliance of Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 and other environmental issues (In respect of State of Maharashtra) dated 08/09/2022.

The NGT directed the state of Maharashtra to pay compensation of Rs. 12,000 crores for its failure to effectively address the issue of liquid waste/sewage and legacy waste. The amount of Rs. 12,000 crores has to be deposited within two months and is to be used for restoration measures.

Around 176 legacy waste dump sites have been identified in Rajasthan and around 370 crore is required to do the remediation work. The timeframe for clearing all dumpsites in the state has been pushed from March 2023 to March 2024. Waste to energy plant work order has been awarded for Jaipur and Jodhpur.

Access to effective waste management services is critical in any city. Where a city’s waste management is inadequate, it has drastic effects on the environment, public health and the quality of life of urban residents.

Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Pradeep Norula Vs Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon & Others dated 10/08/2022.

Grievance of the applicant was that malba/ waste material was being dumped behind the lane of T1, DLF, Phase – III, Gurgaon, Haryana.

Report filed by the authorities informed the court that waste material has been removed.
